Every so often you here about a new garden product and you think “WOW” if this really works then life, is going to be so much easier for me ,and the crops I am attempting to grow. In this case it was about 6 years ago when I first heard of Garlic Barrier as it was called then. There was some talk of Swedish development which to me always sounds impressive i.e. if they like it in Sweden then it must be good is my mantra. I always have believed that nature has cures for many ailments .We just have t o figure it out.
In this case it really is most simple. The concept involves Garlic it seems if you spray crops and plants with this Garlic Spray all the bugs head off as they can’t handle the taste or the smell. It is so minute the amount applied that when the product is eaten by humans it can’t be tasted. But very quickly the product disappeared out of sight at least for me, like a dream, one begins to suspect they had. Then suddenly out of the Blue a man stopped me at a recent trade show, while I was killing some time. He presented me with a newly launched “Garlic Wonder”. Same product new name new life and just launched on to the retail market. Apparently over the last few years it has been widely available in the commercial world and having stunning success and has been building a reputation for its debut in the retail trade. Which means it should be now very easy to purchase. On its first time around it seems did not have enough endorsements to get a sufficient interest going with the public. I immediately requested an audience with the relevant authority, who I was told was Larry Steen, a name I recalled from my days working in the retail gardening world. Larry used to work for Gouldings and Manage “Goulding Garden Care” which included development of new products and sales.
We met up as soon as possible as I was anxious to get up to date on where Garlic Wonder had gone. Larry briefed me over coffee on how it had lost its way until it was trialled properly. He was approached by Aston Horticulture in the U.K way back in 2002 who had taken up developing the concept. They had sent a rep that had arrived in his office with “Garlic Barrier”. Larry recalls how he was making near miraculous claims of Bug elimination in a true organic manner. Based on this he got his hands on some and Larry set up trials with various growers with initial results from Growers, who applied correctly, coming back to him with some very good results indeed.
Based on this Larry decided to continue experimenting. “I decided to carry out trials myself. I found roses which are really susceptible to bugs of every shape and size that when sprayed every 10/14 days achieved very healthy pest free plants status with a bonus of dark green glossy leaves. But the best success was with carrots”. Larry lived in an area that has wild carrot and parsley in the hedges and root fly is a constant problem, to such a degree that his neighbour refused to grow carrots but suddenly the dreaded carrot fly was gone and Larry had excellent crop of carrots
So the experiment continued next up in 2003 was Island View Nurseries who had a large acreage of lettuce under glass with a major problem of black fly. Garlic Barrier was applied in one greenhouse with great success. They then used it in all there greenhouses with even a greater success plus with a great reduction in disease and very little loss.
Larry left Gouldings and set up his own company selling mainly to golf courses. He then introduced it into the golf course trade and found that it preformed very well as a stimulant and as a protection against many of the diseases affecting golf greens like Leather jackets, rabbits, and birds. Larry came to realise though that while this is a great product you do have to follow the instructions correctly to maximise success “some green keepers were failing to use it properly and they were not getting the results required. Application is vital if you want the type of success it is capable of”. Next up for the Garlic application roar test was O’Dowd’s Nurseries one of Ireland’s biggest rose suppliers they also gave it the thumbs up. Its popularity has grown with the commercial growers and now finally after a long wait it is time for the public to get a chance to use it. Its taken time because most of the development was aimed at launching it when the market was ready. Larry explains “A number of years ago the average garden centre customer might not have looked twice at this type of product, but with the increase in peoples awareness, of ecological and organic methods of growing plants has thankfully changed” With all this positive feedback behind them it finally has arrived with the retail title of “GARLIC WONDER”.
Its make up is basically a natural product derived from simple garlic extracts. So when the likes of Greenfly etc come along and look to invade crops for a jolly good chew ,the high levels of the pungent or strong odour compound, puts them off. Further to that if they do bite into the leaves the taste seems to send them scurrying away. The Garlic also produces anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties as well as over 30 other sulphur based nutrients that stimulate plant growth. Larry puts it in vey simple terms how good and safe a product this is. “It is water based and biodegradable natural product that will not kill any beneficial insects or harm birds .This means that it is safe to use and it reduces the need for harmful chemicals. As it is such a simple product one can eat vegetables after spraying, just wash as usual after picking, there is no taste of garlic. In fact it appears that the garlic content enhances natural the flavour of fruit and vegetables it has been applied on”.
The one aspect that Larry emphasises as important is the Application which needs to be carried out correctly by ensuring that every 10/14 days one covers all leaves with fine spry of Garlic Wonder. “Make sure you dilute at a rate of 10 to 1 with water and do Not Spray in full sunshine, as it can scorch, in full sun. There is smell of garlic for a short time after spraying. If you are spraying house plants then do it outdoors and bring them back into house shortly afterwards”. It also helps prevent fungal and bacterial attacks away and is endorsed by the “Soil Association” in the U.K. who are very careful about what they endorse. I have already given a few out to fellow gardeners. I think they thought I was imagining that such product existed. Finally I get to deliver on my believe, that if we look hard enough, Nature has within itself the solution for many problems to be solved in an efficient healthy safe way.
